Fertilization: Monogamy by Mutually Assured Destruction
نویسنده
چکیده
The fusion of Chlamydomonas gamete membranes leads to rapid degradation of FUS1 and HAP2, proteins required for gamete fusion. This provides a mechanism to prevent any subsequent fusion events, thereby preventing polygamy.

Genetic monogamy and biparental care in an externally fertilizing fish, the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).
Breeding, male North American sunfish (Centrarchidae), are often brightly coloured and promiscuous. However, the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is sexually monomorphic in appearance and socially monogamous. Unlike some other nest-tending centrarchids in the genus Lepomis, largemouth bass have also been reported to provide biparental care to eggs and fry. Here we use microsatellite mark...
متن کاملSocial but not genetic monogamy is associated with greater breeding success in prairie voles
Much attention has focused on distinguishing between social and genetic monogamy in avian taxa. However, surprisingly few studies have directly investigated this distinction among mammals. We investigated the genetic mating system of the prairie vole,Microtus ochrogaster, a popular model for mammalian monogamy and human attachment. We used space use patterns to define paired and single animals ...
متن کاملMonogamy and haplodiploidy act in synergy to promote the evolution of eusociality.
In eusocial species, some individuals sacrifice their own reproduction for the benefit of others. The evolutionary transition towards eusociality may have been facilitated by ancestral species having a monogamous mating system (the monogamy hypothesis) or a haplodiploid genetic system (the haplodiploidy hypothesis), or it may have been entirely driven by other (ecological) factors. Here we show...
متن کاملNuclear weapons and medicine: some ethical dilemmas.
The enormous destructive power of present stocks of nuclear weapons poses the greatest threat to public health in human history. Technical changes in weapons design are leading to an increased emphasis on the ability to fight a nuclear war, eroding the concept of deterrence based on mutually assured destruction and increasing the risk of nuclear war. Medical planning and civil defence preparati...
متن کاملEvolution of reduced post-copulatory molecular interactions in Drosophila populations lacking sperm competition.
In many species with internal fertilization, molecules transferred in the male ejaculate trigger and interact with physiological changes in females. It is controversial to what extent these interactions between the sexes act synergistically to mediate the female switch to a reproductive state or instead reflect sexual antagonism evolved as a by product of sexual selection on males. To address t...
